Britain
Canada & Mount Clutterbuck    July 2007
Photos from Mount Clutterbuck
My father and I have recently returned from British Columbia, where we scaled our mountain name-sake - despite raging rivers, hordes of mosquitoes, glacier crossings, rock climbing and various other technical difficulties. Needless to say, we had an amazing time and will never forget it.
New Zealand and Singapore    Spring 2006
Photos from New Zealand
Together with my father, two older brothers and their girlfriends, we spent 3 weeks in New Zealand and Singapore. The only word that really captures what NZ is like is 'awesome'. Everything we saw was so dramatic, from the glorious days, to the torrents of rainfall, we loved it all. I only wish it wasn't so far away.
China & Hong Kong     Summer 2001
Photos from China
Travelling through China with Niels, Alex, Rob and the numerous friends we made out there was one of the most fantastic experiences of my life. Not only were the sights, sounds and smells utterly unique, but so were the people and their lifestyles. Our trip provided me with an insight into the psyche behind the world's most exotic superpower. Brilliant.
Iceland '89-ish
-
I went to Iceland with my family back when I was about 10 years old. I was too young to have a camera at that age, but I can assure you that it is a stunning country with much to see and do. In particular were the geysers, cycling around lakes surrounded by mini-volcanoes, sulphurous springs, the Blue Lagoon (where the water is heated by a geothermal vent) and houses with grass growing on top. Fun for geologists and children alike.
Peru - Summer '98
Photos from Peru
I went to Peru on a school expedition with World Challenge. I was 17 years old and I had never experienced anything like this. We spent time in Lima, Arequipa, Cuzco - where we did the Inca Trail, and Huaraz - where we did a longer five day trek. The cultural differences were intense, made worse by a significant language barrier. As you can see from my photos, the views were pretty amazing too.
Bolivia - Summer '02
Photos from Bolivia
My travelling partners for this trip were Alan, Simon (brothers) and my dad. Our aim was to head up into the mountains for an extended high altitude trek. At the peak of our climb we reached 5,000m. At this altitude, with very little acclimatisation we all suffered from headaches and difficulty breathing. The views were worth it though. Trekking across the top of the world, with condors flying in and out of the clouds below us is a memory that will never leave me.
United Kingdom
Photos from Scotland
Despite Britain being my home, I still love to travel around it. I'm currently living in Scotland, so I'm getting around the highlands as much as possible. This stems from my dad taking me youth hostelling around Britain every year since I was 7.
Tunisia - Summer '99
-
A package holiday with my family. Interesting place but I didn't get to see as much as I'd liked to.
Morocco
Photos from Morocco
Another trip with my older brothers and dad. We started in Fez wandering around the ancient city, dodging street vendors and eating pigeon pie. Moving on we headed for the Atlas mountains, where we began our 10 day trek. Although we struggled with or digestive tracts, it was well worth it. The views were spectacular. The local Berber people were fascinating, being some of the most friendly people I've ever met. They were especially tender towards the less able members of their society (notably a hunchback and a child with Down's Syndrome). In summary, a wonderful place, but avoid the pigeon pie!
Malaysia

Another family holiday. We visited Langkawi, Penang, Kota Kinabalu and Kuala Lumpa. Easily the most stunning coastal scenery I have ever seen - I especially liked the swarms of flying fish.
India
-
We only spent a few days in Delhi, having just been trekking in Nepal, but it was still highly memorable. Every other person we saw either wanted to sell us something, or con us somehow. If I ever come back I plan to get out of Delhi as soon as possible.
Nepal

Another trekking holiday that took us right up to the borders of Tibet, and in view of Everest. This trip really redefined the meaning of mountain to me. If you want to get away from it all, this is the place for you. Truly the top of the world.
Thailand
Photos from Thailand
As one of my earlier expeditions this was a real eye-opener. Everywhere was fascinating; the people, mountains, temples, ruins, jungles, beaches, hidden caves, nightlife, and sacred monkeys - you name it, it's all there. Really enjoyed this trip.
Europe
Having travelled so widely around the rest of the world it would be rude not to visit Europe a bit. So far I've made it to France, Spain, Greece, Italy, Germany, Switzerland, Portugal, Ireland and Bulgaria.
Mexico, Guatemala & Belize
Photos from Central America
A fantastic all-round trip with my old school friends, Alex and Niels. Starting in Mexico city, we explored the Yucatan peninsula, Chichen Itza, Isla Muyeres, Cancun, Belize City, a beautiful lake in Guatemala then back to Mexico. A great mix of culture beaches and beer.
Norway
I was quite young when my family went to Norway - but I remember the fjords. And elk burgers. Hmmm...
United States
After a conference in Cold Spring Harbor, I spent four days touring New York. For someone who doesn't really like cities, I was quite impressed - and the Empire State Building is almost a mountain...
